Return to Work Letter after Maternity Leave

The time spent with your newborn baby is never enough, even if you have extended your maternity leave. Spending the maternity leave period with your newborn baby and planning to return to work is always an emotional feeling. You have to be prepared for the joining day as you have to earn for your baby's future. One of the preparations for rejoining your duty is to write a return to work letter to your company informing them about your intention of resuming the job.

The letter should clearly indicate your interest in resuming the job on the same position you left before your maternity leave. If you are planning to return and work part-time, then be specific to mention whether you want to work for the 1st half or the 2nd half (1st half - before lunch and 2nd half - after lunch). You have to submit a doctor's certificate that can authorize you to return to work.

If the doctor has advised you to take precautions while working due to the complications faced during the delivery, you have to attach a doctor's note as well. Just remind the company about your joining date that you have mentioned in your maternity leave letter. If you are joining before the expected date, state it that you feel comfortable and as per your doctor's opinion you are fit to join before the end of your maternity leave.

Your return to work letter has to be short and precise. There is no need to add anything extra in the letter apart from your joining date and few enclosures. However, if you feel like requesting some privileges from your employer, you can mention it in the letter. Again, it is totally up to your employer how to respond to it. If there is no special request to be made to the employer, then just mention about your joining date and the enclosures. Here is a sample letter that you can modify it as per your situation.
